The paper presents some aspects related to the development of small businesses in rural areas, with
particular emphasis on barriers to their operation and development. In addition to the barriers that apply to
all companies, firms located in rural areas are forced to overcome specific barriers specific to rural areas.
Presents the results of empirical research on development issues, conducted in 2012, in the small and medium
enterprises engaged in economic activities in rural areas in Malopolska.
