Nitrogen (N) fertilization increased tall wheatgrass pasture (Thinopyrumponticum) production; however, nitrogen use efficiency is low probably asconsequence of ammonia (N-NH3) volatilization losses. Therefore, the objectiveof this study was to quantify the magnitude of N-NH3 volatilization losses fromurea applied to tall wheatgrass pasture. The experiment was carried out atBalcarce, on a typic Natracuol and the treatments were: control, 90 and 180 kgha-1 de N (90N and 180N, respectively) as urea (46-0-0) broadcast in autumn andspring. Losses of N-NH3 volatilized were measured using a semi open static method.Nitrogen applications produced N-NH3 volatilization losses depending of N rates(17 y 48 kg N ha-1 average for 90 and 180 N, respectively) and application time(23 and 20 % of N applied in autumn and spring, respectively). In both fertilizationtimes a close association was obtained between soil ammonium content (0-10cm) and N-NH3 volatilization losses (p<0,001 r2=0,71 in autumn and p< 0,10 r2=0,21in spring). Volatilization of N-NH3 in sodic soils of cattle aptitude is an importantmechanism of N loss of the system, and explains the half of no recovered Nfertilizer by the pasture.
