dc.descriptionDespite its large basins and stores of groundwater, access to water for drinking, cleaning and irrigation is an issue in the Sudan, particularly in the River Nile and North Kordofan States. The lack of a sustainable, reliable water supply in these areas is exacerbated by the effects of climate change, which can cause droughts and flooding. Indeed, in the country’s National Adaptation Programmefor Action (NAPA), and its second National Communication to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), agriculture, food security and water were identified as priority areas. Through the introduction of solar-powered water-harvesting systems, the project aimed to guarantee a water supply in drought-prone areas of the targeted states to enhance productivity in agriculture and livestock production; to boost crop yields and reduce the risks of crop failure; to provide an adequate amount of safe drinking water; and to increase the implementation of sustainable water harvesting practices through capacity building and monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
