Descripción
The outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023 led to large-scale population displacements within Sudan and to South Sudan. It was estimated at the time of project formulation that the number of returnees to South Sudan could reach one million if the conflict continued. Food security in South Sudan was being negatively impacted, with food and transportation costs rising in towns bordering Sudan, especially those heavily reliant on Sudan for market supplies. Higher demand for humanitarian assistance as against caseloads that did not factor in the conflict, as well as host communities sharing resources with returnees, were also anticipated to potentially impact food security. The situation also increased the likelihood of resource-based conflicts that could result in additional food insecurity due to disruptions of agricultural activities.
