Agricultural land of good quality is scarce and the increasingly growing population in urban areas has accelerated the loss of fertile land. In rural areas, abandoned lands are left exposed to erosion and become unproductive. Degradation is being exacerbated by an increased frequency and intensity of extreme climate events.
