2026-06-27http://hdl.handle.net/123456789/210032The Gambia is located within the West African Marine Ecoregion (WAMER) that covers 3,500 km of the coasts of Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, and Guinea. At the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, the region is the northern limit of distribution for a large number of coastal and marine animals and plants. Coastal habitats in the region are diverse; varying from desert sandy shores of Mauritania, through deeply indented, estuarine and island coasts (e.g., Guinea-Bissau and the Gambia), to the lagoon coasts on the Gulf of Guinea.The estuarine wetlands of the region are globally significant breeding and wintering grounds for numerous migratory birds. The Eco-Region has designated ecologically significant reserves, parks, and protected areas e.g., Sine-Saloum Delta Biosphere Reserve in Senegal, Niumi National Park, the Bao Bolon Wetland Reserve, and the Tanbi Wetland Complex in Gambia.18application/pdfFAODocument
